The time of the loss, September ' 69, sounds about right. I was the gun platoon leader at the time and also IP. I was flying the wing ship and giving WO 1 Terry Mclelland his checkout as team lead. He was flying 113. That's the aircraft we had the rocket pods painted like budweiser cans. We were covering an ARVN insertion southwest of PhanRang into what was to be a cold LZ. Terry took fire and lost tail rotor control. He tried to make it back to PhanRang AFB but the aircraft became uncontrollable and he had to ditch in the trees. He did a super job and none of the crew received any serious injury. After we got the crew out via an airforce helicopter with a winch, the aircraft was blown in place by airforce fast movers.
